Professor Greeting

Thank you for visiting the website of the Department of Pharmacology, Graduate School of Medical, Dental and Pharmaceutical Sciences, The University of Tokushima.

It has already been two and a half years since I assumed the position of professor. This year, four third-year medical students have joined us for medical research training, and the classroom is as lively as ever. I hope that through their active participation in practical training, they will be able to experience the real thrill of basic research. We are determined to make a fresh start this year, and to share the same direction in our research activities.

Regarding research, we were able to publish a review article on iron research (Ikeda, et al. J Med Invest. 2022), which is the main research theme of our department, and a paper on Kampo medicine research (Ikeda, et al. Phytomedicine. 2022). Dr. Funamoto was promoted to Associate Professor in April, and we expect him to play an even more active role in research activities, classroom management, and student education. In terms of research, Dr. Funamoto has contributed to the development of research in the department by revealing many interesting findings on various projects.

Regarding education, with the cooperation of many professors in the Departments of Physiology, Neuropsychiatry, Hematology, Endocrinology and Metabolism, and Pharmacy, we have continued to offer lectures based on horizontal and vertical collaborative education that transcends the boundaries between basic and clinical sciences. We also plan to welcome Dr. Toshihiko Yanagida of Miyazaki University for pharmacology role-play training, providing an opportunity to learn about drug treatment from the standpoints of both medical professionals and patients/families. In addition, since five years ago, we have been conducting an integrated basic medical training program with biochemistry, physiology, and pharmacology. A web-based simulator has been introduced for pharmacology practical training, enabling active practice. Due to the Corona disaster, face-to-face lectures and practical training have not been possible for the past three years, but from this year, face-to-face lectures are now possible. We plan to provide education in such a way that students will not be disadvantaged.

Tokushima University is one of the few universities that focus on training medical researchers in a very favorable environment with all medical faculties and facilities. Academic background and age are completely irrelevant for research. If you are interested, please feel free to contact us. The excitement of discovering new findings in research (Eureka) is something that cannot be expressed in words. We would like you to experience that excitement with us. It is not difficult at all. It is up to you, the visitor of this site. Let's research together to make new discoveries!
